Data Support Engineer

The Role


As the Data Support Engineer, you’ll be responsible for providing advanced operational support required to ensure a smooth execution of our data engineering infrastructure.  You will be ideally well versed in technology frameworks and toolsets required to maintain big data engineering pipelines and related transformation workloads in a modern data ecosystem. This role will work closely with the Data Engineering and Data Operations Leads to help deliver the benefits of strategic massive data Engineering initiatives to the wider business and data team.


A day in the role looks something like this…


  • Working in an Agile environment and provide support to the business on our data engineering pipelines and related workloads
  • Help to administer and optimise core infrastructure (e.g. Openstack, Kubernetes, Apache Spark, Hitachi Content Platform, Data Warehouses etc.)
  • Help to onboard application users onto the core data platform by defining resources and their access patterns, managing access requests via automation, patching and upgrades of data platforms
  • Setting up and maintaining event-driven data ingestion pipelines using modern ETL tools and streaming platforms (e.g. KAFKA, SPARK, Python, Scala)
  • Setting up routines for error logging and aggregation, health check sand reporting on the data pipelines E2E
  • Setting up and maintaining Data Reconciliation and Data Integrity checks for Source to Target


What you’ll ideally have…


  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to communicate complex findings and ideas in plain language
  • Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment toolsets (e.g. Git, Github/Bitbucket, Bamboo/Jenkins/Octopus etc)
  • Big Data Tools and Programming Languages (KAFKA, SPARK, Scala, Python, Pyspark)
  • Exposure to containers (Kubernetes, Docker)
  • Exposure to Scheduling Tools (Airflow, Active Batch, Control M)
  • Exposure to cloud-based DevOps automation patterns on e.g. AWS/Azure/GCP
  • Ability to quickly adapt to changing business needs to help support production issues
  • Excellent research and personal development skills, always able to challenge the status quo and seek new ways to solve challenging problems on the Data pipelines
